Preparing the application for a Registration Certificate ("Anmeldebescheinigung")

When and where does one apply for the Registration Certificate ("Anmeldebescheinigung")?

  • The application for the Registration Certificate must be submitted within four months after entering Austria.
  • The application must be submitted in person at the competent office of the Austrian Immigration and Residence Authority, the location of which depends on the individual’s place of residence.

Documents to be prepared

The following documents must be presented to the competent Immigration and Residence Authority when applying for the Registration Certificate (“Anmeldebescheinigung”):

  • Valid EU passport or identity card 
  • Residence registration ("Meldezettel") 
    as proof of the place of residence in Austria
  • Proof of why you are residing in Austria
    e.g., employment contract, trade register excerpt (“Gewerberegisterauszug”), student record sheet (“Studienblatt”)
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence, if necessary
    e.g., salary slips, bank account statements
  • Proof of health insurance coverage, if necessary
    e.g., Austrian e-card, European Health Insurance Card, social insurance data sheet (“Versicherungsdatenauszug”)
  • Relevant documents on your family status, if necessary
    e.g., marriage certificate, partnership document, birth certificate of children

Pleaser consider the following:

  1. Personal documents that are not in English or German need to be translated by a court-certified translator. Depending on the country the documents were issued in, they must also have verifications. Find out more more  ()about that!
  2. The Registration Certificate does has no expiration date.
  3. The Registration Certificate is needed for various purposes, for example, if one wants to apply for Austrian family allowance (“Familienbeihilfe”), childcare allowance (“Kinderbetreuungsgeld”) or other benefits.  
  4. The Registration Certificate does not come in a credit card size. It does not look like a driver’s license or an identity card but is an A4 sized document.
